Little Elm named one of state’s safest cities

Long known for its small town charm, Little Elm can now boast that it’s also one of the safest cities in Texas.

According to statistics released by the FBI last week, the town ranked No. 4 among cities with a population above 10,000, based on the total crime rate per 100,000 residents.

Highland Village was the top-ranked city in Texas, with Sachse at No. 8.

Police Chief Waylan Rhodes said he was pleased with the ranking.

“If you make the top 20 it’s awesome,” he said, “and we’re in the top 5. I’m really proud.”

Rhodes noted the ranking can be attributed to a council and staff committed to the public’s safety.

“Without the strong support of the Town Council; we would not have adequate staffing and the necessary equipment and training it takes to do the job at the highest level,” he said.

“We also have a great group of men and women working for the department who simply get the job done day in and day out, people who are dedicated to serve the public at the highest level of professionalism possible.”

Rhodes added that the ranking also speaks well of the department’s efforts toward crime prevention.

“The department is very proactive toward crime prevention and we strive to maintain a high visibility and presence in neighborhoods,” he said. “Additionally, the department’s Community Services Division does extremely well and has made a significant impact offering various safety programs helpful for both youths and adults. We have worked to build a relationship many citizens and business owners in Little Elm and feel this has made a positive impact toward the general attitude of many people toward the department and its employees.

“In addition, you can’t ignore the fact that overall Little Elm is fortunate to have so many good and decent people living here and that itself helps make this a safe and pleasant place to live and visit.”
